Camels, candles and circus in the cathedral

Normally in January, Wells Cathedral is empty as the chairs are removed for cleaning. However, on Saturday 21 January the building was full of children and their families and Sunday School leaders from across the diocese for the annual Children’s festival.

The theme for 2017 was Camels and Candles and during opening worship three wise people and a camel arrived, following a star. Bishop Ruth introduced the camel to everyone, and as the final strains of the song “Bumpy Road” echoed around the Cathedral, the children set off for their activities.

This year the nave was home to circus skills, crafts were made in the south transept, a reflective area was located in the Lady chapel, music was heard in the Chapter House, global activities were in Vicars Hall and Camels could be found in the Education Room.

At the end of the day, the new Dean of Wells, the Very Revd Dr John Davies, welcomed everyone back to the nave for closing worship. Everyone left with bags full of goodies and heads full of ideas.
