bath & wells: services for children and young people schools & colleges
Collective Worship - Introduction
A daily act of Collective Worship is a legal requirement in all schools. Church
of England Voluntary Controlled and Aided schools have a special responsibility
laid upon them by their historic foundations and their original mission to the
children and families in the parish to provide 'religious instruction and
worship according to the principles and practices of the Church of
England.'
Society has changed since the nineteenth century and most Church schools now welcome children from different faith backgrounds and from none. Acts of Collective Worship in Church schools still offer an experience of Christian worship and introduce pupils to the Anglican heritage, but should do so in a way which is inclusive, not exclusive. The school Collective Worship Policy, Planning and Organisation should ensure that opportunities for reflection and prayer should be offered in ways which enable children either to join in or to remain alongside the worship without feeling left out.
Advice and support on any aspect of Collective Worship can be obtained from the Education Department of the Diocese of Bath & Wells.
