Schools and Colleges - Introduction

Over a hundred years ago, the Church of England pioneered education for all, building a network of church schools across the nation that served their local communities.

A century later the education has changed almost beyond recognition, but the Church of England still has a large investment in teaching and learning.
  • The Diocese of Bath and Wells covers the whole of Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset

  • Over fifty percent of Primary Schools in this area are Church of England schools

  • Over 33,000 children and young people attend Church of England schools in this area

  • More than 600 people serve as Foundation Governors in Church schools and many more church members serve as Governors in Church and Community schools

  • There are Church of England chaplaincies working in Further Education Colleges, the University of Bath and Bath Spa University
    Bath University Chaplaincy
    University of Bath Anglican Society

  • There are over 8,000 children and young people in parish based groups in the Diocese. Over 1,700 adults work with them

  • Every day of the year the Church through its members is sponsoring and supporting learning and teaching

  • Spearheading and supporting this work is the Diocesan Education Department based in Wells. We aim to do all we can to encourage and support learning through good teaching based on the Christian faith and its values

  • Our experienced and well qualified advisers and staff provide a wide range of services and support across the Diocese

Examples of our work include...
  • Running in service training for teachers, governors, youth leaders and clergy on a wide range of subjects both in Wells and in schools and parishes throughout the Diocese

  • Working in partnership with the three Local Authorities, providing both curriculum, building and pastoral support for schools and other bodies.

  • Building new Church Schools and improving existing ones

  • Co-ordinating the Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools (SIAS)

  • Being voting members on three Local Authority Education Committees and other related statutory bodies

  • Organising large scale events for children and young people in Wells and across the Diocese

  • Advising Governors on the appointment of Head teachers

  • Providing resources through our Education Resource Centre

  • Advising Community schools on RE and Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural issues

  • ...and much more
Overseeing this work is the Diocesan Board of Education. This is a group of people appointed or elected by the Diocesan Synod who are experienced in education and committed to seeing the Church taking an active part in education.

Although there is some funding from Trusts and Local Authorities, the bulk of the funding comes from regular parish giving. Every parish church contributes towards the work of the Education Department.

Working in partnership, we strive to provide the best possible service to all. We aim to support all education establishments, working professionally, efficiently, creatively and in an open manner.
