Spiritual and Moral Development and Collective Worship

Collective Worship is an ideal time to provide many of the opportunities for spiritual development outlined in the checklist, particularly the chance to
  • listen, puzzle and reflect
  • develop personal beliefs and values
  • show insights into deep questions of life, change and death
Music, art, prayer and stilling can be used within the context of Collective Worship to help children develop the ability to reflect on their own inner feelings. This is easiest to manage in classroom acts of worship or with small groups.

Useful resources

Posters - perhaps of nature, or reproductions of works of art

Music - to establish a variety of moods and atmospheres

Books:
Reflections, Veronica Williams (CEM, 1989)
Aimed at secondary though the ideas are transferable

Assemblies from the Gallery, Margaret Cooling (RMEP, 2000)
OHPs of pictures from the National Gallery with assemblies built around themes from the pictures

Gazing in Wonder - Developing Spirituality with young children (Key Stage 1)
Looking Beyond - Developing Spirituality with Junior children
Jill Fuller (Kevin Mayhew, 1996)
Simple ideas for starting points, activities and final prayers. Particularly useful for class-based worship.
Collective Worship can also be a good opportunity to develop themes of right and wrong and other issues of Moral Development, particularly in beginning to understand the link between belief and behaviour in a Christian context.
