bath & wells: mission
About Zambia Links
The Diocese of Bath and Wells is linked with the Anglican Dioceses of Zambia. As
a result of exchange visits and parish links, personal contact has been
established and the chain of prayer and fellowship strengthened.
We are Companions in Mission. Companionship means
- Praying for each other;
- Learning from each other;
- Challenging each other;
- Meeting each other;
which involves a willingness
- To trust;
- to be honest;
- to share;
- to change.

Zambia
Zambia is a landlocked country three times the size of the UK, situated in
southern Central Africa. It became independent in 1964 and is now a Democratic
Republic with a population of 10 million.
The wealth of the country is in its people, who display qualities of
vitality, patience and tolerance in the face of huge problems. These include
international debt, HIV/AIDS and climate change. Frequent droughts and floods
cause shortages of maize, the staple food, which together with high unemployment
due to the fall in demand for copper contribute to the growing poverty of most
of the poplulation.
It is a predominantly Christian country, the main denominations are the Roman
Catholic Church and the United Church of Zambia (non-conformists). Anglicans
make up 2% of the population, served by around 60 priests spread over the whole
country. Since the late 1970s Bath and Wells Diocese has been linked with the
Dioceses in Zambia.
