PRACTISING PRAYER

This course aims to enable participants to explore preferred ways of prayer, to consider other ways of prayer and to gain insights into spirituality. It is ideal for those who have not previously undertaken a course on prayer. It is also suitable for those relatively new to faith and those who are not so new who wish to re-consider their prayer life. After this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the way in which you pray and how others do

  • Describe how your pattern of prayer has developed

  • Identify preferred ways of prayer

  • Tryout a new different method of prayer

  • Take part in contemplative imagination prayer

  • Examine a range of images of Jesus and assess the implications for your own prayers

  • Identify how you think God sees you and the implications for prayer

  • Pray for another person

  • Pray using 'centring prayer'

  • Pray using an 'examen'

  • Cope more effectively with distractions and resistance

Short talks and discussion, group and individual exercises, practice of prayers are all used during the course. There are three sessions of two hours over three weeks.

What people said

One group in Clutton with Cameley has recently been involved in this course and these are the comments of their priest in charge, Anita Thorne.

‘The material is excellent; I shall keep it and use it again in various ways. The pictures of Christ were well worth using. I arranged them on a circular table and people walked around to choose the one they liked. They also discussed any they did not like and why. I very much liked the course book to take away to encourage further reflection. It saved me a considerable amount of work and because of the quality of the course I think such resources make it much more encouraging for busy Parish Priests to put on courses and to take up the use of local trainers.’
