The Jesse Tree
Set up the Jesse Tree
Read Isaiah 11:1-2
Jesus was promised by God to his people long before he was born. In Isaiah we read that Jesus would be a "shoot" (like a new leaf on a plant) from the family tree of Jesse. Now Jesse was the father of David, who became a great king of Israel. Jesus was born a thousand years after David as a shoot from the same family tree.
How far back can we trace our family tree? Families are important for many reasons. It is often because of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents that we come to know and love Jesus Christ.
The symbols and daily thoughts for this first week in Advent will go further back than David and his father, Jesse. They will go back to the very beginning of the world, to creation. That is when everyone's family tree began.
Prayer
Thank you, God, for our family.
Help us as a family this Advent season to prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birthday at Christmas. As we think about his family tree, may we grow to love him more and to love our own family more. Amen.
Cut out and colour the first symbol, the Stump of Jesse, and hang the symbol on the Jesse Tree.
