Seasonal Prayers - Trinity Sunday

Three in One

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
2 Corinthians 13:13

You will need a long strip of paper about 74cm long (try a broadsheet newspaper) and 9cm wide; scissors

Show the group your strip of paper. Tape the two ends together to make a circle, but before you do this turn one end of the paper twice so that the circle has a twist in it. Explain that this circle represents God's never-ending love for us, and that the circle goes on and on just like God's love. God loved us so much that he sent his Son to tell us about him. God the Father and God the Son (Jesus) are different to each other but at the same time, both are completely God.

Cut around your circle, about one-third from the edge, so that you make a second complete circle. When you have finished cutting the second circle, you will find that it is linked to the first circle although it is also a separate circle in its own right.

After Jesus had died for us, he came back to life and returned to his Father in heaven. God sent his Holy Spirit to help us and encourage us, to be our friend and helper.

Take the thicker of the two circles and cut this in half so that you have a third circle also linked to the other two. God the Holy Spirit is also a distinct person but is completely God at the same time. We call the Father, Son and Holy Spirit "the Trinity", which means "three in one".

Invite the group to join in with the response We worship you! Every time they hear the cue words We want to tell you that...

God the Father, who designed and created our beautiful world,
Who formed and made us,
We want to tell you that
We worship you!

God the Son, who walked on earth as a human being,
Who taught us about the Father's love,
Who died for our wrongdoing,
We want to tell you that
We worship you!

God the Holy Spirit
Who helps us and encourages us,
Who lives in us and enables us to live as Christians,
We want to tell you that
We worship you!

Holy Trinity, you are like a loving family

Holy Trinity,
you are like a loving family,
separate but united,
each one different but adding something to the whole.
It is to you we offer our life
wherever we share a community with different people.

In our families
may we celebrate your love.
Among our friends
may we celebrate your faithfulness.
In our church
may we celebrate your holiness.
At work and at play
may we celebrate your work and your rest.
In our politics
may we celebrate your justice.
Because the world is given to all the human race
may we celebrate the life you have given us.
Amen.
