Diocesan Advisory Committee

Before a parish takes any action to a church involving alteration, repair, extension or demolition, or the addition or removal of contents it must, through the Diocesan Registrar, submit a Faculty Petition for the Chancellor's approval. The DAC is a statutory committee whose members (apart from the Archdeacons) are volunteers appointed by the Bishop's Council. They include specialists, clerics and lay members and they advise the Chancellor of the Diocese about the issue of faculties but the DAC is also there to serve the parishes.

The person to contact in connection with DAC matters is the Assistant Secretary, Mrs Gill Hawkings. She works in the Diocesan Registry and her telephone number is 01749 674747, her direct fax is 01749 834060 and her email is: gill.hawkings@harris-harris.co.uk. She is able to advise on the procedure for obtaining advice from the DAC and faculty approval. She should be able to help on a variety of matters including the appointment of new church architects, the names of conservators, archaeologists etc. etc.. If she does not know the answer to a question raised by a parish then she is normally able to point the parish in the direction of someone who will know or be able to help.

The DAC has a number of guidance notes/ policy papers available which can help parishes in formulating proposals for approval by the DAC. Currently papers are available on:
  • Accessibility audits for churches
  • Archaeological contractors (details of)
  • Archaeological watching brief
