Singing with Passion
Friday 9th March 2012
As part of The BBC People's Passion, the BBC has commissioned a brand new choral work which will be performed by choirs across the country at Easter 2012. Christ Church Bath has risen to the challenge and will unite with other singers in a moment of national harmony to perform this stunning new work with music composed by Sasha Johnson Manning and lyrics by the poet Michael Symmons Roberts - 'Love's Young King'.
Christ Church Bath's choir is a thriving mixed group of singers. There are no auditions; anyone is welcome to come along and join in, but they pride themselves on the standard of music making they achieve, singing from a large and constantly expanding repertoire.
Sarah Jones of the choir said: "When we heard about the nationwide "People's Passion", we were really keen to be a part of it. We have been working hard in rehearsals learning the music and we are looking forward to working with the instrumentalists who will be joining us.
"We are also excited about the opportunity to use these new choral pieces as part of our Easter outreach. We hope people will come and listen and find new meaning in the Easter story through this music: "if stone could speak, this cave would sing of death's defeat and love's young king."
This is an interactive project and everybody can get involved. All the music and resources are online at BBC Radio 4 - The People's Passion. There are simplified versions for less experienced choirs or school choirs.
Everyone taking part can communicate with other choirs performing the work, hear from the artists and performers involved in the project, share ideas and stories and find out about what else is going on around the UK through Twitter using the hashtag #bbcpeoplespassion and Facebook as well as the Radio 4 Blog and BBC Local News sites.
Christ Church Bath along with St Andrew's, Burnham-on-Sea, St Mary's, Bridgwater, Crewkerne Methodist and choirs of Britain and Northern Ireland will join their voices in song to perform The People's Passion over the Easter Weekend with a special performance being broadcast live on BBC Radio 4.
