Job Clubs

Job clubs can be invaluable in supporting the community in these times of high unemployment and financial hardship.

One example of a successful project is the Front Room in Swindon. It runs on a self-help basis with some support and food from a local minister.

It began as a result of identifying the need to listen to people who are unemployed. Today's job market is complex. People are often applying for around 50 jobs at a time, mostly online. Unemployed people need support, and a job club or similar supportive environment responds to the need for people be helped.

Job clubs help to maintain self esteem, and instill the confidence to carry on trying to find work even when members receive many rejections from potential employers.

They provide a supportive environment in which people can share experiences of redundancy and changes in the jobs market.

Angela Overton-Benge, Chaplain to Economic Life in Swindon, speaks of the positive impact on job clubs in this short film.

Please do let us know of any job clubs or similar projects in your area so that we can share this information here.
