Pastoral re-organisation can lead to the creation of an enlarged benefice. We can help parishes coming together in a new benefice to learn about each other and to explore the opportunities and challenges presented by the change.
By consulting locally we develop tailor-made support for the specific context.
We recently worked with a long-standing, mainly rural benefice who were joining together with a larger, mainly suburban parish. The rector of the benefice was retiring and the incumbent of the single parish was becoming priest for the newly enlarged benefice.
We met with the clergy to better understand the local context, and developed a one-day workshop for Churchwardens, Treasurers, PCC Secretaries and other lay leaders. Parish groups came together in the workshop to share information and develop plans.
We also used a spiritual gifts exercise to identify the gifts of each parishioner, then formed groups with matching gifts. Groups enjoyed using their shared gifts and drew out shared needs for support.
Clergy reported that the workshop helped grow confidence about the change, developed contacts between parishes and helped smooth the transition.
