A chapter of the Society of Catholic Priests is being set up in the diocese by the Revd Lore Chumbley, Priest in Charge, Christ Church Bath and the Revd Isobel Rathbone, Priest in Charge, St John the Baptist Batheaston with St Catherine.
Says Isobel, “We are delighted to be able to tell you that with the kind support of Bishops Peter and Ruth, we are developing within this Diocese a branch (or Chapter) of the SCP. This is a mutual support society for Anglican priests formed in 1994 with the object of promoting the formation and support of catholic spirituality and evangelism. Our theology is liberal, sacramental and inclusive. The SCP has Chapters in most dioceses in the United Kingdom and also elsewhere in the Anglican Communion.
“Initially, by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter our inaugural eucharist will take place in Wells Cathedral on Thursday, 9 November at 2 pm and we welcome Revd John Joyce from Chichester Diocese to preside for us. We would also love to welcome anyone who would like to come and find out more. We would ask for your prayers for this exciting new venture, that it may be for the deepening and strengtheningf the ministry of priests in this diocese.”
The Bath and Wells Chapter expects to meet once every two months or so, with the emphasis on celebration of the eucharist, hospitality (meaning a good lunch), friendship, and discussion of topics of general interest.
