Blessing of the Oils

Hundreds of people gathered at Wells Cathedral on Holy Tuesday for a Diocesan Eucharist service with the Renewal of Ordination Vows and the Blessing of the Oils.

The annual event is an opportunity for clergy and laity to gather together during Holy Week. Those called to ordained ministry are invited to reaffirm their ordination vows and laypeople are invited to receive anointing for the ministry they have been given.

Anointing with oil is a tradition that dates back to the Old Testament. There are several accounts of someone being anointed with oil as a sign of their ministry to God.

Following the blessing at Wells Cathedral, clergy carry the oil back to parishes across the diocese where it is used to anoint the sick, for baptisms and to consecrate church buildings and altars.
