Like the pioneers who first reached the North and South Poles (well, not really!) a number of intrepid travellers arrived at the Old Deanery on Saturday 2 February through the ice and snow. These pioneers of today came to the first ever Taster Day for the CMS Certificate in Pioneer Mission at the Old Deanery in Wells. They were eager to learn more about the new qualification being offered in the Diocese in partnership with the Church Mission Society (CMS).
Nineteen potential students of contextual mission spent a day sharing their stories, playing the ‘Mission Possible’ game, and learning about the shape and content of the new course. The Certificate will be delivered over six weekends a year, with monthly evening gatherings to think further on the topics being covered. Module leaders are drawn from the CMS Pioneer Leadership Course and from pioneers currently serving in Bath and Wells.
Andrea Campanale of CMS came to lead parts of the day with Revd Tina Hodgett, Evangelism and Pioneer Team Leader. Andrea works as CMS Pioneer Network Developer and has developed pioneer hubs of the Church Mission Society in Chelmsford and London. “It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic pioneers who’d braved the snow to find out more about this new training initiative in the Diocese. We’re looking forward to getting to know them better and helping to support and equip them in their pioneering mission when we begin in earnest in May.”
The Bath and Wells Hub (called the ‘Holy Rumpus’) will facilitate learning, sharing and networking for pioneers across the Diocese.
There was a real buzz in the room throughout the day and people went home excited and inspired. The next step involves completing the application form and attending a discernment conversation with module leaders.
On Monday morning the emails started coming in: ‘Thank you for Saturday, I really enjoyed it.’ ‘I found the taster day extremely beneficial and enjoyable. It was great to meet Andrea, whose story is so inspiring and was so good to talk to and hear from other budding Pioneers.’ ‘It was a great day!’
