They’ve been backpacking this summer at Christ Church, Weston-super-Mare; journeying to different countries – without actually leaving the church building.
Welcoming 40 children every day, the holiday club used the Scripture Union’s Backpackers Holiday Club resources and adapted them to suit their needs. Centering on Matthew’s Gospel the resources help illustrate the life of Jesus. Each day the children travelled around the world using just their imagination (and a lot of scenery and props), following Jesus’s life, from his arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his death and resurrection.
The group drew on the experience of being in a particular place that linked to the Bible teaching for that day. On Wednesday they were in the Gare du Nord Paris – an extremely busy and noisy place; a place of arrivals, a place where you might go to meet someone special. This linked to the story of Jesus’s arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
Nicky Boardman Family Ministry Coordinator at Christ Church says, “The children had a fantastic week and learnt a lot. We couldn’t do this without our big team of volunteers. They’re made up of all ages and are a real picture of Church family and what it means to serve God together.”
Meanwhile Quantock Coast Benefice had an enjoyable Holiday Club in Stogursey Church Rooms. The theme was God’s Superheroes II, exploring Abraham, Samson, Mary and Paul through crafts, story and games. Pre- grown cress was cut to show Samson’s haircut and then made into egg and cress sandwiches for lunch, afterwards more seeds were planted to watch the cress grow.
The week of activities also included a morning spent in the Rectory Garden playing watergames.
Just two of many Holiday Clubs being run throughout Bath and Wells this summer – Thank you to all the volunteers for your hard work.
