The Diocese of Bath and Wells is launching an urgent appeal to help the people of Eastern Zambia who are suffering severe floods.
The Right Revd William, Bishop of Eastern Zambia, says “People have lost their properties, food supplies and crops. Roads are now running rivers and people are camping at schools and villages. The situation is dire although government has moved in with relief food. It could do with support from other organisations like churches. This is a recipe for hunger in the coming months as there will be no crops to harvest.”
A package of supplies for a family of six lasting one month will cost approximately £35. Each package contains: Two 25 kg bag of mealie meal; 2.5 litres of cooking oil; 1 X 10kg of beans 2 X 500ml bottles of chlorine; and a pack of soya pieces.
Bishop Peter and Bishop Ruth say, “We value our links with our brothers and sisters in Zambia enormously and our heartfelt prayers are with them at this time. The situation is truly devastating with hundreds of families affected. Let us hold them up to God in our prayers and, if we can, make a donation to help reach our target of £17,500 so we can help as many of those families as possible.”
