Limited return by clergy to church buildings

Following the House of Bishops meeting, which determined that diocesan bishops can now decide when it is appropriate for clergy to return to their church buildings for live streaming or private prayer, Bishop Peter and Bishop Ruth have today written to clergy, Readers and churchwardens issuing permissive guidance.

This means that although churches in the diocese remain closed, one authorised person – clergy or lay – may now enter a church building for private prayer or to live stream a service.

The letter and guidance from the Bishops can be downloaded below. The Church of England’s detailed guidance for clergy re-entering church buildings can also be downloaded.

These are challenging times and we continue to learn what it means to be called upon to proclaim afresh the Gospel in each generation.  Whilst the Gospel message is unchanging, how we proclaim God’s love in Jesus in this generation requires us to reimagine our future as well as respond to the immediate crisis.

The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers has  issued its own guidance to bell ringers , which says it is still too early for ringing to resume and the current suspension of all ringing should remain in place.
