Connecting with young people in Yeovil during ‘Lockdown’

Ruth Glendinning became the youth worker in the Preston Plucknett Benefice in September 2019 after having completed her youth work degree with South West Youth Ministries (SWYM) . No training course could have prepared her for the current pandemic and lockdown. Ruth has not been deterred though and has thought creatively about how she can continue to engage with the church Youth Group and the young people on the local estate.

Ruth and her team have been meeting some of their young people weekly via Zoom (please be aware of age restrictions and guidelines, contact the Go Team if you need advice). They have sussed out a range of games that work over the online platform including ‘Would you rather…’, ‘Bring me a…’(scavenger hunt), Balderdash, Uno, Scattergories and PSYCH! (check out the app – it’s an online game).

Having mastered games online they opted to go one step further with a bake off, where they baked cakes and cookies online together. You can see some of their impressive results in the photo.

Ruth says: ”We have tried to keep each session on a Sunday light, as the young people seem quite stressed with the home schooling and lack of face to face interaction with friends”.

The team have also been looking at ways to stay connected with young people they are usually in contact with in the local community, delivering Easter Eggs on the estate over the Easter weekend.
