We welcome Ian Theodoreson to his new post of Chair of the Diocesan Board of Finance, Ian who is currently Chair of Bath and Wells’ Investment Committee, takes over from Harry Musselwhite, who recently stepped down as Chair after 13 years. Ian previously worked for nine years in London as Chief Financial Officer for the Church of England, this included amongst other things; the Archbishop’s Council, the Church Commissioners, and the Pensions Board.
In 2017 Ian left his job in London and together with his wife, embarked on a gap year, which took them to New Zealand where they ‘made the most of the country’s best summer for 30 years’ whilst touring in a camper van. Whilst away they decided to put their house in Essex on the market and, as Ian says, “we weren’t sure where God was going to take us.” After time spent on a narrow boat travelling Britain’s canals, they settled in in Burrington in the foothills of the Mendips.
Ian is both “excited and daunted” about taking up his new role. He said:
“Harry has been such a part of the life of the diocese for the last 13 years and that’s not something you can easily and smoothly take over from because he has so much accumulated knowledge.
“Covid aside this is an absolutely crucial time for the Church of England. Nationally our membership has shrunk by 24% in the last ten years. So, any call to get involved with the church at the moment is a big call. I’m hoping Covid has shown us that our message to the world is still relevant and that people really do want to engage with the church. We just have to find the best way to help them do it.”
