Any course you take part in should give you at least one thing to take away with you. It should provide you with something that resonates with your past, where you are now, or helps you to join a few dots and move forward into the future. Mission Shaped Ministry does exactly that. Its content is diverse and you will hear yourself engaging one moment and wondering what you are doing there the next; but your moment of desperation will be the epiphany for another. This course takes you on a gradual kind of journey; when you look back you realise how far you have come theologically, on a practical level and your personal faith journey. I took part in this just before I changed parishes. It enabled me to consolidate my thinking and keep “scratching the itch” that was missional engagement. I am now part of a six Church Benefice and I believe if I had not had the grounding which Mission Shaped Ministry provided, I would not have been able to go on to other levels of learning to discern what “being missional” means to me and the future of these communities.
Revd Trish Ollive Vicar, Polden Wheel Benefice
Mission Shaped Ministry is a really high quality piece of training, which really got us thinking about what mission to new networks and communities would look like, and how the church relates to culture. The tutors were excellent, and the material on evangelism was superb. Several of our group who went on it are now involved in new mission ventures, and we’re using the material to train up church planters in new housing areas. I would thoroughly recommend it, but don’t do it alone – if you can take a group of people through MSM it could have a major impact on your church. If you’re thinking of setting up a Fresh Expression, or a new mission venture, then MSM can help lay the foundations for it to be fruitful and sustainable.
