RE, collective worship and spirituality

Collective worship, Religious Education and Spirituality, are key areas for all church schools to promote and develop. Collective worship should be inclusive, invitational and inspiring. It should offer the opportunity, without compulsion, to all pupils and adults to grow spiritually through experiences of prayer, stillness, worship and reflection. Religious Education should be non-confessional and considered as an academic subject. It should contribute towards enabling all pupils to flourish through the provision of high-quality teaching which reflects the Church of England Statement of Entitlement. The promotion of spiritual development is a requirement of all schools in England as part of their offering of a ‘broad and balanced’ curriculum. Church of England schools are recognising the need to work this out with integrity, recognising that whilst having a Christian foundation they are inclusive and diverse communities of children, staff and families.
