The schools team offers advice and guidance on a wide range of issues specific to the governance of Church of England schools. The appointment of all foundation governors is undertaken via the diocese and we offer training and support to all Church school governors.
Interested in serving as a foundation governor? Contact the School Organisation Team by email or call 01749 685120.
Our Guide for Foundation Governors in Church of England Schools (available below as a download) is sent to all new and re-appointed foundation governors. All governors or aspiring governors should be familiar with the Governance Handbook and general advice on school governance is available from your local authority’s Governor Services Team.
A new Guide for Foundation Governors and Roles and Responsibilities guidance will be available to download below soon.
Your Instrument of Government
The Instrument of Government is one of the legal documents governing your school. It has a statutory content which sets out the name of the school and its governing body, the constitution of the governing body (including those responsible for the nomination and appointment of different categories of governor) and the ethos statement underpinning the school’s governance.
The size (between 9 and 20) and make up of your governing body varies depending on the category of school (VC, VA, Community, Trust or Foundation) and what is appropriate for each school.
If you are an academy your governance constitution will be set out in your Articles of Association. However, the percentage of foundation representation will reflect that which your Instrument of Government previously specified.
