Funding options

Once you’ve developed your vision, sought advice, and started the permissions process, it's time to look at funding options. This page will help you develop a clear and sustainable financial plan to support your project — without putting your church’s long-term future at risk.

Here’s how to approach it:

Understand the Full Cost of Your Project

Begin by gathering written quotations for professional fees and all expected costs. This total will give you a realistic funding target and help shape the rest of your plan.

Work Out How Much You Already Have

Next, identify any church funds already available and compare them with the total cost. The difference between these figures is your fundraising goal. Consider whether support might come from the congregation, the wider community, insurers, or grant funders.

Check Your Church’s Financial Health

Your project should be financially sustainable — not just now, but into the future. Use tools like the Generous Church Check-up (available from your Local Giving Adviser) to review giving patterns and identify opportunities to encourage regular, long-term giving.

Speak to Your Local Giving Adviser

They can help you explore new giving mechanisms that make it easier for your congregation and community to support the project. This might include:

If you haven’t already, book in a session to discuss the results of your Generous Church Check-up and next steps.

Share the Vision and Inspire Generosity

Be open about your project's purpose and costs. Share the need with your congregation during services and through church communications. Teach and preach about generosity in a way that inspires people to give.

Explore Grant Opportunities

Request access to the Cornerstone Grants Database through the Giving and Funding Team. You’ll find a list of national and regional funders who support church building and community projects. Shortlist those that align with your goals.

Engage the Wider Community

Let people beyond your congregation know how they can help. Host local fundraising events, post updates, and use your church’s networks to spread the word. The Communications Team can support you in shaping the right messages.

Apply for Grants

Once you’ve identified potential funders, begin drafting your applications. It’s a good idea to get feedback from someone with experience (like the Lead Giving and Funding Adviser) before you submit. Make sure your application clearly connects your vision, needs, and impact.
