Every Church of England church building must be inspected at least once every five years by an approved architect or surveyor. This is a legal requirement under Church law, set out in the Care of Churches and Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Measure 1991, the Faculty Jurisdiction Rules, and Canon F1.
The inspection ensures that the building is being properly maintained and identifies any urgent or developing issues. The report covers areas such as:
- Roofs, walls, and floors
- Drainage and rainwater goods
- Heating, lighting, and ventilation
- Fixtures and fittings
- Churchyard structures, if applicable
The inspecting professional produces a written report highlighting:
- Urgent works (usually needing attention within 12 months)
- Recommended works for medium- and long-term maintenance
- General observations to support routine upkeep
It is the Parochial Church Council (PCC)’s responsibility to arrange the inspection, receive the report, and consider the recommended works—some of which may require a faculty.
