Learning about spirituality through prayer

6th July 2023

In June, Trull Church of England VA Primary School participated in a wonderful Spirituality Through Play event. The day was organised by Trull Church and the Libby Cuthbertson, the Children and Family’s worker in Trull. The aim of the day was to offer all pupils time to think about spirituality; what it means and respresents.

Foundation Governor, Tracey Khodabandehloo said, “It was a fantastic couple of days with children, church members and school staff joining together to explore themes such as serving and giving, music and fellowship.”

Different year groups worked together to look at seven different areas: fellowship, sung worship prayer, serving and giving, telling others, learning from the Bible and communion. The children had time to develop a deeper understanding of their own spirituality and experience as they considered questions such as Why are the church a group of people, not a building. Why do Christians meet and celebrate together? What does the Lord’s Prayer teach us? Why do Christians have communion and what does it represent?

The pupils shared their thoughts about their experiences. Tilly said, “We loved learning about communion and the activity with the biscuits.” Luke said he “liked the way we looked at the Lord's Prayer and then wrote our own words on the back creating our own prayer.” Alice said she, “Liked learning more about God.”

Ruth Slade, from the Go Team, who took part in the day, shared the enthusiasm felt by everyone at the school. She said, “It was great to see the children engaging with the theme of spirituality and thinking about what church really is.”
