Children and youth workers from across the Southwest come together in Devon

Children and youth workers from across the Southwest gathered in Torquay, Devon earlier this year for the launch of the South West Youth Ministry (SWYM) 360 Community for 2026. The event drew representatives from churches spanning Guernsey to Gloucester, and provided a unique opportunity to share experiences, support one another, and form lasting friendships.

Annie Herridge, Children’s and youth lead at Holy Trinity Frome, one of those who joined the group shared her experience of the gathering, “It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with others to share, encourage and enjoy two days of learning, supporting and relaxing. The role of childens and youth workers can be a lonely one, and many attendees spoke of feeling overlooked, underappreciated and isolated in their work. Together we were able to pray with one another, support each other, and form valuable networks of friendship and support both privately and within the SWYM community.”

“The retreat was a great way to stop, sit with others in similar situations, give it to God, and be refreshed, so that we can go back to our ministry contexts refreshed and refilled, ready to give. Being part of the community has been a joy so far as we have started to get to know and support each other through prayer and conversation in small groups and online gatherings.”

Annie’s views are echoed by Ruth Slade, Go Team Adviser, who said, “I’ve joined the 360 community this year to see what it’s all about and to journey alongside youth and children’s workers as they put their all into ministry.”

“During the retreat, participants experienced moments of laughter, tears, prayer ministry and anointed worship, feeling the transformative power of faith and fellowship. Many arrived feeling exhausted and discouraged, but left renewed and energised by the atmosphere of encouragement and shared prayer.”

Annie says the experience has inspired her and she is looking forward to using and sharing all she has learned, “I feel so blessed to have been given a place on this programme and look forward to all the learning, prayer, mini retreats and professional development days that are yet to come this year with new friends and supporters!”

The opportunity for 10 people from Bath and Wells Diocese to join the 360 Community was funded by the National Church which meant that many were able to join who may otherwise not have been able to.
