Ladies in the parish of Middlezoy are spreading God’s love way beyond diocese boarders by knitting hats for the Seafarer's Mission in South Shields.
An initiative which started with some of the congregation of Holy Cross Church has spread to the community and over the past few years, they estimate they’ve sent over 200 hats to the Mission!
So why the Seafarer’s Mission? Jean Campbell who told us about this venture says, ‘We decided to support the organisation as we often celebrate Sea Sunday. It’s an organisation very close to my heart as my father was a merchant navy captain and also served in the Royal Navy during the second world war. My grandfather and uncle were also sailors, and one of my cousins built wooden fishing boats! The sea was in their blood which is not surprising coming from the Northern Isles of Orkney.’
Jean continues, ‘When someone donates a hand-knitted hat, we remind them of the happiness that must give a seafarer. Someone has spent time creating something just for them in gratitude for all they do to bring goods to and from our shores.’
And Paul Akerman from the Mission to Seafarers said, ‘Every knitted item we receive is far more than a gift of clothing; it is a reminder to seafarers that they are seen, valued, and remembered. Made with care and kindness, these handmade items bring warmth and comfort during long months at sea. Our port chaplains and ship visitors witness firsthand how deeply appreciated they are as they deliver them on board. This cherished part of our ministry is only possible through the generosity, time, and dedication of supporters like you. Thank you.’
Jean would love to see parishioners across the diocese knitting for the Mission and if you want to support them too, check out their website here.
