Congratulations to the parish church of St Nicholas, Kittisford, which has received the Choral Evensong Trust Patronal Festival of the Year Award for 2025.
In 2025, the Choral Evensong Trust funded 80 patronal festivals in Britain, supporting parish churches in celebrating the feast day of the church’s patron saint (on the nearest Sunday) through a service of choral evensong, followed by a reception.
On the evening of Saturday December 6, St Nicholas’ Day, an eight-voice student choir from Wales, the Bute Voices, gave a concert in the church to an audience of 70. A local community choir of 25 people rehearsed on Sunday afternoon, learning music specially composed for the festival evensong. A local primary school choir sang the psalm, and the student octet sang the anthem. The bells were rung before the service, and the church, already decorated for Christmas, was full, with 95 people. Evensong was followed by a celebratory meal in Kittisford House Barn nearby. The concert and the service were recorded and broadcast on local radio.
Announcing the award, Dr Rupert Sheldrake, one of the trustees for the Choral Evensong Trust said, “St Nicholas, Kittisford, was chosen for this award because of the exceptional degree of community and children’s involvement.”
The award itself consists of financial support for an ongoing series of choral evensongs in St Nicholas’ church inspired by the success of the festival.
Following the announcement Churchwarden of St Nicholas, Annie Musgrove, said they delighted to receive the award, “It was a complete surprise to us all to be given such an award. The weekend festival was an amazing team effort from the small village of Kittisford which has less than ten houses at its core, the remainder being more dispersed farms and houses.
“We will now put our heads together to see how best use this further award to encourage a wider community involvement in our series of Choral Evensong services planned for 2026.”
